The Ascension Matters …

by Richard Long

The Collect for Ascension Day:

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that like as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

I’ve been reading a great book by N.T. Wright titled “Surprised by Hope” in which he deals with the scriptures that deal with the resurrection of Jesus, His Ascension, and promised Return.

It has made me appreciate each of these separate and important moments in the ongoing work and ministry of our Lord.

When it comes to the Ascension it is very important for our prayers. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that we have a high priest in the order of Melchizedek “who holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.  Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:24,25)

In other words, we can intercede, because He is always interceding.  His presence at the right hand of his Father, means we always have an advocate in the throneroom.  As we come in His name to pray to the Father, Jesus the Christ, our great Friend and Brother is there already on our behalf.

The Ascension Matters.
