Praying in the Streets of Halifax

prayer-tent

by Richard Long,

Here’s a great report from a bunch of folks in Halifax who are taking prayer to the people.

From 24-7 Prayer Canada

Church amongst the People

Jesus got downright venomous with religious leaders who put obstacles between people and God.  I believe that He would be cheering on loudest those who make a point of connecting people on the outside with Him.

“What are you doing out here?”

Late Saturday nights in Halifax, Nova Scotia now sits a corporate type tent in the middle of the city’s public square with a few beach chairs, some lights and a sign that says “How can we pray for you?”  The time and place are strategic as the city is well known for abundant night life, with partiers starting at the bottom of the hill, on the harbour, working their way up the hill, from bar to bar, as the evening progresses.  Parade Square sits in the middle of the progression, within earshot of one of the most notorious of the bars.  It is nicknamed the Liquordome.  No kidding.

My house shall be called a house of prayer

There at the tent are a team of volunteers.  Not a big team, mind you,…  … but a handful of volunteers ready and willing to pray for matters trivial and weighty.  Each prayer made at the request of a passerby includes not only the matter at hand, but also a petition that God would reveal Himself to the person in their life and through the situation.  Their act of requesting prayer taken and offered as an invitation for God to work in their life.

Guest Blogger: Jill Weber

September 12, 2009

by Richard Long,

Our good friend, and the director of the Greater Ontario House of Prayer (GOHOP), Jill Weber, is starting to do some regular blogging on prayer topics.  I really enjoyed what she wrote this weekend.  You can get her weekly thoughts at the GOHOP website and/or if you sign up to her GOHOP Facebook site.

Here’s her reflection on what the future of the prayer movement might look like …

“So What Do You Think it Will Look Like?”

I’m often asked that question.  I guess because of the time I spend both in the prayer room and in our communities connecting with leaders, people assume that I must have some sense of what is going on from a God’s eye view.  Eeek.  At that point I try to look wise, nod my head and smile my most sagacious and mysterious smile while I frantically try and figure out what to say.

So I decided that it was time to actually reflect on what I think IT is going to look like.  By IT I am referring to the work of God, especially as it pertains to the prayer movement in our region.

And I’ve decided that IT looks like an English Garden.

You’ve seen them, I’m sure.  Wild and chaotic – flowers and grasses exploding every which way – multiple layers of color and texture.  Things seem to have no rhyme or reason – a garden having a riotous bad hair day.  But what seems like it would be cacophonic is actually a symphony to the appreciative eye.

And I think the prayer movement is like that.  One of my mentors (he never let me call him a mentor, but I followed him around for years anyways) once cautioned me against trying to “broker” the prayer movement – against being the “go to girl” for prayer – against trying to replant the garden into tidy rows.  Instead, I should just wander from patch to patch, watering and speaking encouragement (plants like it when you talk to them!).  He even cautioned me against weeding, because some of those weeds are just as pretty as the plants, and who gets to decide what is a weed and what is a plant anyways?  I always thought the designation was somewhat arbitrary.

Right now I’m seeing Hamilton bloom, and it’s exciting!  Multiple prayer conferences, new revival prayer meetings and mobilization, prayer teams going to local skateboard parks, 24/7 prayer events popping up out of the ground – it’s like crocuses coming through the snow every which way, and I can’t wait to see the garden in full array!  I just know the city is being beautified, right now, this very moment.

That’s what I think IT looks like.  You all are going to have to figure out another question to ask me.  :o )

The 30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus

September 3, 2009

by Richard Long,

Our Muslim neighbours are currently observing a special season in their year during the month of Ramadan.  One way you can bless them is to increase your prayers for them.  Not sure how to do that?  Fortunately there is a global prayer movement focused on this effort and a great website to help you.

Here’s the summary of the vision taken from the website …

The 30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus coincides yearly with Ramadan (a holy month of fasting in Islam).

This prayer movement is currently coordinated out of France (previously from Australia), and has been operating since 1993.

It calls upon Christians to make a concerted but respectful effort during that month to learn about, pray for and reach out to Muslim neighbors—across the street and around the world.

As Christians we resist the temptation to be caught up in generalizations, anger, hate or fear toward anyone. In the climate following the 9/11 tragedy, here is a proven tool to direct our focus more prayerfully, Christ-like and constructively.

It is not our intention with this prayer focus to disparage Islam or Muslim sentiments in any way. We recognize that humans and the Muslim world are far too complex to simply or easily condense or explain with a mere booklet.

At the same time, as Christians, we long for all the world’s people to have an opportunity to understand the grace of God incarnated in Jesus Christ.

To this end we inform ourselves, pray for, and support respectful opportunities to make that grace also known among Muslims.

Here’s the website.

Prayer Mentoring: The Gadite Track

July 26, 2009

Fall_Gadite09

by Richard Long,

Some of the best training and mentoring for experienced intercessors is provided by Cityscape Prayer Ministries.  Although they are located in Vancouver, through their conference calls and the internet they are very capable of providing good first-hand relationships.

Here at NHOP we partner very closely with Sara Maynard and her team.  If you have been to any of the National Schools of Intercession you will know that the teaching comes from leaders from both of our ministries.

Many intercessors have already been a part of the Gadite Track in the last couple of years.  Cityscape is taking applications for their next group.  You can read all about it online at their website.  Make sure you scroll down the page to see the details.

Live Streaming from The Promise Gathering

July 22, 2009

watchmen

by Richard Long,

Tonight was the opening session for The Promise gathering hosted by Watchmen for the Nations here in Ottawa at the Lansdowne Civic Centre.  It began with a procession of the stones that had been originally been brought to Winnipeg 10 years ago.  It was symbolic of the theme of this week, which is Thankfulness for God’s Faithfulness.  There was as usual over an hour of exhuberant worship that ushered in the presence of the Lord.  It is very visual with dancers and flags and fine artists joining the large worship team.

The great news is that if you can’t be here you can still watch it online through live streaming.

The morning sessions begin at 9:30 and evenings at 6:30.

Here’s the webpage that gives you all the details.

Prayer as a Movement

July 16, 2009

prayer_as_a_movement

by Richard Long,

If you haven’t checked out the European-birthed 24-7 Prayer movement, this is your chance to get an introduction from the guys who started it.

This is a short video (found on the 24-7 Shorts) website that gives a great overview.  By the way they have prayer centres all over the world now including in Canada.

Prayer as a Movement: An introduction to 24-7 Prayer

Plenty of organisations claim to be ‘movements’, but 24-7 really is one… Watch the 4-minute video ‘Prayer As Movement’ to see how this wild explosion of prayer, mission and justice started by accident and spread into more than a third of the nations on earth. Featuring 12 men, 7 women, a man in a cowboy hat, and 3 people called Jo, all making fools of themselves in central London.

Prayer as Justice: Kelly Greene in Boystown, Mexico

June 7, 2009

by Richard Long,

I love the video shorts that the 24-7 Prayer movement is creating.  You’ve got to watch the new one about “Prayer as Justice”.

Here’s the description …

“In the mafia-run walled city of Boys Town, Kelly Greene is praying with women and men caught up in cycles of prostitution, poverty and drugs. She knows that prayer is a dangerous, dirty business, but she’s modeling Christ’s love, mercy and justice and lives are being changed. “

“The Promise” July 22-25 in Ottawa

June 3, 2009

Wftn

by Richard Long,

We are really excited about the announcement of a special Gathering hosted by Watchmen for the Nations here in the national capital this summer from July 22-25.  Entitled “The Promise” it will be held at Lansdowne Stadium and is open to all who want to attend.

Every “Gathering” is unique and significant for the spiritual history of our nation.  This one promises to be no exception.

Here’s the explanation on this particular event …

“The Promise Gathering will be a time of both celebrating the milestones of our ten-year journey and positioning ourselves before the Lord in humility and brokenness to seek His face that He might transition us into a new season of seeing His Kingdom and His spiritual governmental authority released in our nation.”

You can get all the details on the official website here.

Prayer Wisdom from Alice Smith

April 6, 2009

by Terry Long

A few years back, Richard and I had the amazing privilege of meeting and spending an afternoon with Eddie and Alice Smith.  They are an incredible modern day resource on prayer and intercession and they also head up the US. Prayer Center.   Alice’s article below is excellent.  Please take the time to read it.  I know you will be encouraged.   Find out more about the Smith’s here.

 Persevering Prayer!
Alice Smith

“Have you experienced times—or even extended seasons—when your prayer life seemed more like the Sahara desert than the life-giving oasis it should be? When that happens, the problem isn’t on the Father’s end of the line, it’s on yours.

Many people of prayer act as though they can’t proceed in daily living until they get a ‘word from God.’ They have heard others talk about the Lord speaking to them to the point that they think they should hear from God continually. But God is not a chatterbox.

Novice Christians who claim they are hearing from God on a daily basis are usually known for their much talking, not for their effectiveness in the Kingdom. Resist the temptation to push the Lord in prayer, demanding that He come to you on your terms.

If you will walk according to the truth of God’s Word, He will surprise you with profound, life-changing words that will extend His kingdom through your life. But He won’t do so if you keep pressing Him to speak. You may get “words,” but they won’t necessarily be from the Lord. (The enemy is often anxious to speak words to those who lack spiritual discernment. ) God wants you to be faithful in the mundane things of life—He wants you to pesevere—so that when the extraordinary happens you will have enough character to bear it without pride.

Ever notice how a practiced long-distance runner knows when to pace himself and when it’s time to dig in and push? Runners call this perceived exertion. To perceive something is to be aware of it by the senses. To exert is to push ahead in an extraordinary way. So at that inevitable point in the critical race, when the runner feels exhausted, in pain, and feels tempted to quit, he or she has been trained to exert an explosive effort to push beyond those thoughts or feelings. The endorphins kick in, stimulating the body, and the runner wins the race!

This is exactly what we need to do in the seemingly dry seasons of prayer. When you pray, sometimes you suddenly “hit the wall,” and distractions, fatigue and sleepiness come over you. You feel weighed down, unfocused and out of it. That’s when the trained and disciplined intercessor applies perceived exertion. He or she begins to exert extra effort—pacing the floor, praying aloud, playing praise and worship music, praying in your prayer language, reading Scripture aloud, or pressing in with added emotion.

There are also times when the Lord removes His manifested presence so that you will exert yourself to run after Him. Struggle can be very good if you don’t give up. But don’t push for an expected response from Jesus. You are running in prayer for the sheer faithfulness of it. The benefits may come later.

Runners win races by pushing the boundaries and stressing their muscles; the exertion builds up and tones their bodies. In a similar way, an intercessor’s spiritual muscles are strengthened when he or she runs hard after the Lord. This ebb and flow of seeking and finding the Lord allows us to stay tender, compassionate and sympathetic to others who find prayer difficult. But be forewarned: When you try too hard, without setting a pace and faithfully running it, your flesh will take over and perform whether the Lord is present or not. You can easily perform ministry—you can pray or conduct any church activity—apart from the Holy Spirit. So be careful that you guard your heart from this happening.

Not every prayer time is a blazing success. There are times when the Lord simply won’t let you catch Him because He will never allow you to take Him for granted. After all, if Jesus allowed you to win every time, then He would be predictable, and in your boredom you would discontinue the pursuit.

I am talking about more than emotions here. Certainly you should begin in prayer by using your emotions, but then you shift into a spirit-to-Spirit engagement with the Almighty! Just as trained runners run with ease—their movements almost effortless—so life-giving intercessory prayer comes from the depth of your spirit. You enter His Holy of holies and invite Him into yours!

Your relationship with God is to be a delightful adventure! A colorful phrase from the Song of Solomon reveals the kind of delight that should be a hallmark of our pursuit of the Lord: “Come away quickly, my beloved. Run like a gazelle or a young stag on the mountains of spices” (8:14). Don’t be anxious or afraid; run to Jesus with love words today. Your heavenly lover delights in the chase!”

National Pastors’ Prayer Network (USA)

March 24, 2009

phil1

by Richard Long,

In yesterday’s blog I referenced Phil Miglioratti (see pic above) who leads the National Pastors’ Prayer Network in the United States.  This is part of the larger Mission America Coaltion.  I had the blessing of attending the meetings as a Canadian observer many years ago in St. Louis when this network was being formed and had the pleasure of getting to know Phil and other members of his team.

Their website is a wealth of informaton.  There are 68 articles on prayer, and many archived resources from the last 14 years of activity toward the transformaton of their nation.  The archives break down into three sections, for Pastors, Prayer Leaders and City Reachers.

We highly recommend you check out the NPPN blog as well.
